Abstract
The purpose of the study is to examine the effects of a textual response training in increasing intra-verbal responses and decreasing echolalic responses of a pre-school child with mild autism spectrum disorder. A four-year-six-month-old male child participated in the study. He emitted non-functional echoic responses under environmental conditions in which intra-verbal responses were required. A textual response training was used in which the child was taught to textually respond to common intra-verbal responses. A multiple baseline across behaviors was implemented to demonstrate a functional relationship between the use of the textual response training and an increase in functional responding during intra-verbals. As a result, it was found that textual response training increased the child¡¯s appropriate intra-verbal responses across all of the three patterns (i. e., greeting, personal information, and gender identification). Therefore, it is deemed that textual response training would be beneficial to promote intra-verbal responses for young children with autism spectrum disorder.
